Will recoil damage my rangefinder?
To understand the probability of damage from recoil to your rangefinder, we must take into account how much force is being applied by common rifle cartridges like the .308, how that force is distributed, and roughly how closely that comes to the amount of force necessary to actually damage your rangefinder.
How much force?
The amount of force is not that great. When you fire a .308, your rangefinder gets pushed about as hard as if you picked it up and squeezed it hard in your hand, but only for a few thousandths of a second.
How is the force distributed?
Inside the Sightlok RF-1, 3M impact-absorbing rubber holds your rangefinder on every side, and the recoil pushes straight back along the bore axis. The force is spread across the whole body of the rangefinder, so the pressure on any one spot is roughly what your thumb puts on the range button. Compare that with a drop. A dropped rangefinder often lands on one corner, which puts all the force on an area smaller than your fingernail and twists the housing. For the same force, the corner of a dropped rangefinder takes roughly 50 to 100 times more pressure than any one spot on a rangefinder in the RF-1.
How close is that to causing damage?
Most handheld rangefinders are built to survive a drop of about 3 feet onto a hard surface. The corner that hits the ground takes a few thousand psi, and the rangefinder survives. Recoil in the RF-1 puts well under 1% of that pressure on any one spot of your rangefinder. At that margin, the chance of a .308 shot damaging a healthy rangefinder in the RF-1 is effectively zero.

“This is a good piece of kit. Does what it says on the tin. One complaint I have is receiving it took 3 weeks because it was on backorder. Wish they would make a greater effort to keep these in stock. But like others have said this is a game-changer and I don’t know why it’s taken so long for someone to invent something like this. I’m a big game hunter and when you’re hunting every second counts. I can’t count how many shot opportunities I’ve missed because I couldn’t shoot fast enough.
