Will recoil damage my rangefinder?
To understand the probability of damage from recoil to your rangefinder, we must take into account how much force is being applied by common rifle cartridges like the .308, how that force is distributed, and roughly how close that comes to the amount of force necessary to actually damage your rangefinder.
How much force?
The amount of force is not that great. For example, in the case of a .308, the cumulative force of the recoil is about equal to the force of you picking up your rangefinder and squeezing it hard for a few thousandths of a second.
How is the force distributed?
Beyond the actual amount of force is an even more critical factor: How the force is distributed. Sightlok RF-1 uses 3M impact-absorbing rubber to hold the rangefinder and evenly distribute the recoil forces while simultaneously shielding sensitive areas like the buttons, the laser aperture lenses, the ocular, and the ocular lenses from impact. Lastly, when the rangefinder is held in the RF-1 mount, recoil force travels straight back along the bore axis, rather than to corners or edges where impact forces can cause more damage. The result of these mitigating factors is that recoil generates about the same amount of pressure on your rangefinder as you exert when you press the range button.
Typical standards for rangefinder durability
Handheld rangefinders are designed to survive drops of about 3 feet, and the impact from a 3 foot drop can generate several thousand psi of pressure.
How close does recoil come to causing damage?
In the RF-1, recoil presses on any one spot of your rangefinder about as hard as your thumb presses the range button, a few dozen psi at most. A few dozen psi is well under 1% of the pressure your rangefinder is built to survive in a 3-foot drop. At that margin, the chance of a .308 shot damaging a healthy rangefinder in the RF-1 is effectively zero.
No reported failures
In two years of selling the Sightlok RF-1, no customer has reported a rangefinder damaged by recoil.
What owners say
“As a former USMC sniper, I have some expertise with mounts that co-witness various sensors. After testing it on various rifles I am impressed. It can be adjusted to fit nearly any scope / rail / rifle combination.”
“Mounted this on an AR-308 long range rifle with a Sig Sauer 6BDX riflescope. Able to range targets now without ever looking through the rangefinder.”
“I put this on my Accuracy International AWM. Nice tight fit. It’s not going anywhere. The bolt screw is hardened, not like cheap stuff.”

“This is a good piece of kit. Does what it says on the tin. One complaint I have is receiving it took 3 weeks because it was on backorder. Wish they would make a greater effort to keep these in stock. But like others have said this is a game-changer and I don’t know why it’s taken so long for someone to invent something like this. I’m a big game hunter and when you’re hunting every second counts. I can’t count how many shot opportunities I’ve missed because I couldn’t shoot fast enough. This cuts the amount of time it takes after spotting the target to taking an ethical shot by maybe 1/3 to a half. I’d say buy it if you’re a big game hunter.”
“I received one of early engineering samples which I offered to test in exchange for feedback. The bolt that came with it was a little too large for my weaver rail. The company immediately sent out a different nut and bolt that fixed the problem. Rest easy if you have a weaver rail as the problem is fixed on the newer units. Great customer service.”
“I love this. Good quality.”
“As described. Not much to say here other than feels like high quality durable material. Installed on a Tenpoint crossbow. Highly recommend.”
“Get what you pay for. Product is very durable and does exactly what I needed it to do. Very satisfied, would buy again, thank you.”
“Worth the cost. It’s not cheap but it’s a powerful tool for those long range shots.”
“How it works great. For shooting on the long distances, it works super. This is what I need on the long distance.”
“Faster to fire accurate shots. When seconds make the difference, you are already sending a round downrange.”
“Five stars. Truly amazing device, I’m delighted to own one.”
“Fantastic product! If you are a long range shooter get it.”
“It fit to the picatinny rail with no issues. So far the mount works as described.”
“Ok. Works.”

“Worth every penny! This item arrived just as described, and it has even surpassed my expectations! I would definitely buy this item again!”
