8 Reasons Every Hunter Should Use a Weapon-Mounted Laser Rangefinder (WMLRF)
February 15, 2025
8 advantages of using a Weapon-Mounted Laser Rangefinder (WMLRF) VS. a handheld unit:
1. Faster ranging
Time is a critical factor during hunting trips, especially in scenarios where fleeting opportunities can mean the difference between success and failure. A weapon-mounted laser rangefinder streamlines the process of range estimation, allowing hunters to range instantly without losing focus on their target. Instead of fumbling with a handheld rangefinder, hunters can take aim and range simultaneously. This efficiency not only enhances the overall hunting experience but also increases the likelihood of making the shot before the window of opportunity closes
2. More accurate ranging due to better optics and greater stability
Rather than ranging though the rangefinder optics, you range using the superior optics of the scope. This reduces the likelihood of taking ill-advised shots that could result in wounding an animal rather than achieving a clean kill. Moreover it’s easier to hold a riflescope steady than it is to hold a handheld rangefinder steady, leading again to greater rangefinding accuracy.
3. Scope and rangefinder operate as a single-unit
By co-witnessing the rangefinder with the scope, the two become a unified electro-optical sensor, with all the benefits associated with that.
4. Fast view switching between rangefinder & scope
5. Faster firing solutions
6. Increased first round hit potential
7. Greater Adaptability
Modern weapon-mounted laser rangefinders often come with advanced features that enhance adaptability in varying hunting environments. Many devices include modes for different types of shooting conditions, such as bright sunlight or low-light scenarios, enabling hunters to function optimally in diverse settings. Additionally, these rangefinders often have integrated ballistic calculators that can be calibrated for specific ammunition types, taking into account factors such as bullet drop and windage, which is particularly beneficial in long-range shooting situations.
8. Integration with Other Technologies
The technological advancements in weapon-mounted laser rangefinders allow for seamless integration with other devices, such as scopes and smartphones. The Sig Sauer BDX platform is an excellent example of this. Some rangefinders come with Bluetooth capabilities, enabling hunters to sync data with their mobile devices for further analysis and adjustments. This integration enhances the overall hunting experience, as hunters can gather valuable information about environmental conditions, track game movements, and even share data with fellow hunters. The ability to leverage multiple technologies simultaneously creates a more comprehensive and informed hunting approach.
WMLRF Options
While it’s possible to purchase a dedicated WMLRF, a more economic and arguably accurate approach is using a Sightlok RF-1 mount with your existing handheld rangefinder, which looks like this:
The advantages of using a Sightlok RF-1 mount in conjunction with a handheld rangefinder versus a dedicated WMLRF include:
– Approx 1/5 the price of a dedicated WMLRF.
– Superior ranging performance & functionality
(Premium handheld rangefinders like the Sig Sauer KILO5K offer longer ranging, a better ballistic engine, and integration with the Kestrel wind meters for real-time windage calculations).
– Eliminates the need the scope mount / scope ring combination which typically add up to $500 to the total cost of a dedicated WMLRF ownership
– More flexible mounting options
– Eliminates the problem of illumination from the rangefinder display shining on the shooters face, which can reveal the shooter’s position during night-time engagements
– Enables more fully integrated electro-optic systems such as the Sig Sauer BDX rangefinder/scope system which automatically calculate the firing solution and display a holdover point in the scope reticle, eliminating the need to dial the scope’s elevation turret.
Concerned about recoil damaging your rangefinder?
Sightlok RF-1 clamps use a specialized anti-shock rubber that is specifically designed to help isolate and protect rangefinders from recoil-related damage. While we don’t guarantee every rangefinder will stand up to the recoil of every rifle, here’s a documented test of the mount with the Sig Sauer KILO1000BDX rangefinder versus .308 rifle recoil:

If you don’t need a ballistics calculator, the Laserworks LE-032 is another low budget WMLRF that works with the Sightlok mount, cost is about $160 instead of about $2000 for a dedicated WMLRF. The mount that comes with the Laserworks LE-032 is floppy and unusable, but the rangefinder itself is functional enough when combined with a Sightlok RF-1 mount, which stabilizes it. Looks like this:
